Ephesians 4:11 “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;”
The body of Christ functions much like the human body. This means that every member has a specific role to play and no role is considered more important than the other.
1 Corinthians 12:12 puts it nicely. “12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.”
The body, in order to function needs the participation of every part, down to the smallest cell. If one cell malfunctions, if one neuron misfires, the body becomes sick and dysfunctional. It is so with the body of Christ; every member must be healthy and function effectively. It is important to understand this because often time believers feel insignificant if they do not have the title of a five-fold minister. This is in part the result of how the five-fold ministry is sometimes presented; as if to seem more important than service in any other capacity. If you are not called to be a five-fold minister, do not be discouraged!
Having established this, we discussed previously that the statement is true which says: “True leaders are born”. Therefore, you are born with the calling to the five-fold ministry. We also discussed that you may have gifts that one or more of the five-fold ministers operate in and not be called to that particular office. The most common example we know of is that “you can have the gift of prophecy and not be a Prophet.”
Ephesians 4:16 solidifies the point that not every believer is called to be an Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Teacher or Pastor. “16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”
It emphasizes the necessity of the individual parts working together to accomplish the goal. The truth is we all do the work of the ministry. Think of it like this: Most of the people that you encounter on a daily basis cannot be reached by your leader. Who then is responsible to be an Ambassador of Christ to them? It is you! When the believers are poured into by each of the five-fold leaders, they are trained and fully equipped, having received the impartation of the gifs active these ministers! In addition to this, we all must also grow to the full stature of Jesus Christ together, “as each part does its work.”
So, some are called to the five-fold. The question is in what part of the body do you fit? What role are you called to play?
Father, I thank You for Your word that brings clarity and understanding. Lord I want to function in the role that You have called me to in the body of Christ, to advance Your Kingdom. I pray that You will make it plain to me as I seek You and give me the grace to endure and stay focused as You prepare me for the work. I pray that we all will seek to be all that You have called us to be, in Jesus’ name, AMEN.
