Succession

In the Old Testament, the practice of grooming potential leaders was of paramount importance. This shows that the principle of succession is an ancient one, that is more relevant in our day than it has ever been.

We see this principle clearly in the interactions of Elijah and Elisha. (1 Kings19:16; 2 Kings 2).

1Kings19:16NIV: “Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.”

God specifically instructed Elijah to anoint Elisha to succeed him as a prophet. Leaders grew into their position through servitude. They were trained through service; they had a first- hand view of what it was like to operate in the ministry they were called to.

Another example of succession is with Moses and Joshua. (Joshua 1). God chose Joshua to lead His people into the promise land. Joshua was often seen with Moses when he went up to commune with God and sometimes lingered there afterwards. When God chose Joshua, he understood that it was not for his own gain, but for the advancement of God’s purpose. Joshua rose in his calling through servitude.

It is God’s plan that the work of the ministry continues from one generation to the next. Therefore, one must realize that his assignment or calling is much bigger than him. David was destined to be King, but he did not know that through his lineage would come the Messiah. Paul, in walking in his purpose, brought the Gospel of salvation to the Gentiles. His ministry and writings bridged the gap between Jew and Gentile. There are so many other examples of those who in fulfilling their purpose made contributions to a much bigger picture.

We are all part of God’s master plan and every individual’s purpose works towards accomplishing God’s goal. As Ephesians 4:16 puts it, every joint supplieth. Every part of the body is sustained by the other as it does its work. This heightens the importance of being perfected through process before functioning in the area that God has called you to. IT IS MUCH BIGGER THAN YOU!

Prayer

Lord You are so BIG! Your ways are higher than mine, Your thoughts are higher than mine. I have not seen or heard in entirety, the things that You have prepared for me. Help me Father to be humble and teachable in servitude as you process me, equip me and prepare me to rise to walk in the fullness of your call for my life. I pray this in Jesus’ name,AMEN!
